Bulgaria is situated in an ideal place. Sharing borders
with Turkey and Greece in the south. Macedonia and Serbia to the west and
Rumania on the northern flank.
To the east is the jewel which is the Black Sea.
It is a wonderful country with beautiful locations.
From skiing to sun bathing, from mountain retreat to
golden coast . From sleepy village to teeming metropolis. It's all there
and you can have any of it at a price you will find quite agreeable.
Brief History
The Bulgarian state was founded in 681 AD as a union
of Slavs Thracians and Proto-Bulgarians. Tsar Boris converted the state
to Orthodox Christianity in 865.
The first Bulgarian State stretched from
the Carpathians in the north to the Balkan range in the south but fell
to the Byzantines in 1018.
The second state was founded in 1185
at Veliko Turnovo and a golden age began when borders were re-established
and Bulgaria was bordered by three seas. The Black, The Adriatic and
The Aegean.
From 1389 to 1878 the country was under the hated
rule of the Ottoman Turks.
Sofia became the capital after the Veliko
Turnovo constitution was accepted in 1879.
From 1878 to 1945
Bulgaria enjoyed some kind of freedom until the communist party led by
Georgi Dimitrov took power and declared Bulgaria a People's Republic.
The rule was oppressive and lasted until 1989
when the then leader of the party Todor Zhikov was ousted from power
(peacefully) and Bulgaria declared itself a Democratic Republic. Bulgaria,
however is not Spain or Portugal.
It's position in South Eastern Europe gives rise
to a continental climate though not of the intense type one might expect
from climates of this type. It is essentially a moderate continental
climate
There are four well defined seasons but there
is no doubting the difference between them (unlike Britain) Winter
is most definitely winter (unless you choose the Black Sea coast)but
on the other hand summer is unmistakable also.
It is hot without being too hot and above all
it is reliable. This is particularly true of the resorts in the east
where the climate is noticeably warmer than inland and could best be
described as Mediterranean in spring and summer. On the whole the climate
can best be described as temperate.
Bulgaria is a wonderful country and
it's potential for development is astounding but don't forget that
it is a country which has suffered from neglect for years.
It's cities and some of it's towns and villages
may not meet with western standards and in many ways it is stuck in
a time which most of you will not recognise. Remember though, that
it's a country which is aware of it's own short comings but also fully
aware of it's assets and is looking to a brighter future. A future
full of promise which you could witness first hand and take part in.
It's people are open and welcoming and there is a self assurance and style about
the young which bodes very well for the future of this great place.
